The Morning Song: learning Lámh through music

I'm delighted to share something very special with you—my first original song, The Morning Song!
This song, written and performed by my husband John and me, along with some help from our talented musician friends, was created especially for children in Ireland who use Lámh signs to communicate.
For those unfamiliar, Lámh is a manual sign language used by children with communication needs and developmental delays here in Ireland.
As an early intervention specialist, I'm always searching for toys, songs, books, and activities to support children's language development. Lámh has been central to my work with many children and families I support. However, finding songs that incorporate Lámh signs can be tricky. Over the years, I've often created my own materials—everything from flashcards and books to songs—to help my students strengthen their communication skills and learn hand-signs.
This time, I wanted to do something a little different. John, being a musician, was the perfect partner for the project. He was immediately on board when I asked him to help me create a "Morning Song" for children. We spent hours crafting the lyrics, carefully selecting words matching Lámh signs, and ensuring the vocabulary was suitable for young children. Our intention was to create a fun, cheerful song, ideal for "circle time" in school.
Originally, I planned to record a simple video of myself signing the song, but the idea quickly grew into something more unique. Why not invite children to join us? After all, what could be more fun than having them sing and sign along?
We reached out to families, and the response was amazing. Several families joined in, including some whose children I've known since they were babies, families who've attended my courses and events, children I currently work with, and others from the local community who wanted to be part of the experience.
It was so much fun to bring everyone together, and the result is what you see today—all these little stars and their wonderful families signing and singing The Morning Song.
The feedback has been heartwarming. John and I are thrilled to hear that children, families, and schools are enjoying singing and signing along. As parents of a child with additional needs, we are passionate about creating opportunities for inclusion, and communication is at the heart of that. For many children in Ireland, learning Lámh is essential for expressing themselves and connecting with others.
A special thank you goes to Lámh for their incredible support and for encouraging us to launch the song as part of the National Lámh Day celebrations. Another big thanks to The Colour Club in Arklow for letting us use their beautiful, colourful space as the perfect backdrop for our video.
I hope you and your little ones enjoy singing, dancing, and signing along with The Morning Song.
