Using toys to educate our children about diversity
Dec 01, 2021At Christmas time, many children are going to receive lovely presents. Dolls, superheroes, figurines, toy people, family dolls... and they will enjoy endless hours of fun with them. So, let´s pay attention to what type of dolls and figurines we get for our children
When choosing these toys for our children, we must think, what type of people they represent?
Remember Barbie?
Of course, you do; she was a tall, pretty blonde doll with a fantastic figure. And then, along came Ken, a white, strong built man.
Children from different cultural backgrounds, abilities, different colour skin, often didn´t see themselves represented in these toys.
A lot has changed since then, and more and more toys represent different kinds of people, as diverse as we are. By having toys that represent people with different abilities, cultural backgrounds, and skin colour, all children can see themselves represented. Not only that, but it also gives us an excellent opportunity to educate our children, so they understand and embrace diversity, and to celebrate that we are all unique.
I was looking for pretty and good quality dolls, and I came across this website. And then I realised their dolls are so diverse too, how great! The dolls represent children with different abilities and cultural backgrounds, and they are so pretty (and made in Europe too).
